Do you spend a lot of time sitting throughout the day and just feel exhausted afterward even though you didn’t move? If you sit for long periods of time it can make you stiffen up and isn’t good for your health! Moving your body is an important part of being a healthy individual and getting started isn’t as difficult as some might convince themselves.

Walking

This one is super simple and a way to get moving for free right now!

If the weather is nice go get outside and walk around!

If you see going on a  walk as a boring and daunting task here are some fun ways to make it more of an adventure!

Go find a new place to explore! Something like finding a new park or an easy hike in your area can make things much more interesting!

Make it a photo challenge with friends!

If you love a good challenge, start one on social media with your friends and family!

It can be something totally silly! Here are a few examples to get you started with your walking challenge!

  • Have a different type of plant everyone has to spot each day for 14 days
  • Have a color a day challenge where you post photos from your walk of things you found that were the color of the day
  • Walking OOTD for 14 days
Make it challenge with yourself!

A great way to challenge yourself is by setting a goal and keeping track!

You set a goal and keep track of it many ways but 3 of the most common tools are:

  • A journal
  • A smart watch
  • An app (There’s an app for that!)

A journal can be a great way stay accountable and visibly see progress! There are many walking tracker journals out there to help you keep track of mileage, average heart rate and even how it made you feel.

Keeping track of things such as your average heart rate, perceived exertion and even the enjoyability of the walk can be useful to you, a trainer or even a medical professional in the future if it was ever needed! It can be a wonderful feeling to see progress and be able to adapt a plan for the future.

Here is a list of some of the best walking journals I’ve found for easy access on Amazon!

DANCE

Dance

I might be partial since I am a professional dancer but dancing is one of the most fun ways to get our body moving! Added bonus you can do it alone or with others!

Dancing can be something that is cost effective and simple to do or a developed skill with time and proper training.

Music or no music all you have to do is start moving your body in different ways! Whatever feels right is right!

You can turn on some music and just get moving or if you need a bit more structure you can seek out instruction. There are many different styles of dance to choose from so find one you’re interested in and start there!

Here is a list of some of the styles you have to choose from

  • Hip Hop
  • Jazz
  • Ballet
  • Tap
  • Ballroom
  • Bachata
  • Line Dancing

Finding dance instruction doesn’t have to be hard either! You can use something like Groupon to find a class to get started in your area or find a youtube video!

Youtube has so many options for style, ability and time!

Below I have linked several YouTube channels so that you can get started on your dancing journey today completely free!

I have made this YouTube playlist to help you get started! It includes the channels listed above and more beginner tutorials to get you started!

YOGA

Yoga

The movement for of yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental well being. Many of you probably already know a few yoga poses and postures but taking a little trip down the yoga rabbit hole might be a great way for you to start moving.

This is a great way to improve circulatory health, strengthen muscles, improve flexibility and even more! Here is a link for more in depth information about the benefits of yoga https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/13-benefits-of-yoga

If flexibility is part of your goal in becoming more active then yoga can be a great place to start. Flexibility can promote blood circulation and muscle health! If you would like some more flexibility information and tools for consistent improvement check out my post How to Become Flexible and Stay Flexible

Games

Games

Playing games is the next way to get your body moving!

Games can be fun and distracting to a point where you don’t realize you’re being physical! Promoting Physical activity, range of motion and even cardiovascular health is something that common physical games do!

A few of my my favorite Examples would be…

  • Twister
  • Capture the flag
  • Hide and Go Seek Tag

All of these games are a blast for family and friends of all ages!

Twister

A party game classic to play with friends! I have played Twister too many times to count! Its one of my favorite challenging games to get moving indoors and out!

This game for sure comes with risks if you have some clumsy players! Overall its safe and a good challenge for your mind and body!

Capture the Flag

Learn how to play this game!

Good for cardiovascular health and happiness! You are doing something that is actually good for you while being competitive!

Hide and Go Seek Tag!

A game that costs nothing at all and can be done inside or out is my kind of game! The rules are in the name!

MARTIAL ARTS

Martial Arts

This is a way to get your body moving if you are looking for discipline and structure. Martial arts are made up of systems and traditions and usually have a form of ranking system. These are art forms and forms of self defense which can be useful for real world application. While there are many videos online to get you started with various types of martials arts this is something that seeking classes and in person instruction will be necessary for.

Seeking out an instructor can be a daunting task especially if going it alone. I would suggest doing your research on each studio you look at and maybe looking to something like GroupMe to book with others in your area who are interested in the same things!

Some of the most commonly known forms of martial arts are…

  • Karate
  • Taekwondo
  • Jujitsu
  • MMA
  • Kickboxing
  • Boxing
  • Krav Maga

Conclusion

Getting your body moving in a safe way doesn’t have to be time consuming or difficult to accomplish. Just make it something you enjoy and be safe!
